Felt 3D Representation of the movement of light
So this is the 3D work I was going on about in my last post.
At first I struggled to find the right material that would best represent the light. I tried to knit wool but I felt it was to solid and heavy looking.
About two weeks ago there was a talk about fashion and the materials they use within fashion. The tutors started talking about felting and showed a few images and it suddenly dawned on me that felt really looked like light when it was stretched out. I started making the felt...the process involves separating the fleece (long unwoven woolen fibers) in strands and layering these strands, then douse the fibers in a soap and water mixture and rub and roll the fibers until they are blended into each other. you then rinse the felt and leave to dry.
I wasn't sure what to do with the finished felt but my tutor Mike Fox told me to stretch and rip it and make an installation piece that would take over a space. The following photos are the resulting piece.
