Ball of Light- Denis Smith

http://documentaryheaven.com/ball-of-light/ ----> This is a link to a documentary I watched this week. This 15 minute documentary tells the story of Denis Smith, professional light painter. Two years ago, Denis was in a high pressure sales job, struggling with drink, debt and depression. His family life was suffering, so he needed to make changes to his life before all was lost. He moved to Australia and soon discovered light painting, a unique form of photography which allows for vibrant and surreal imagery. Through a new found love of creativity, Denis began to change his life and find clarity.

The ball of light reminded me of an orb of light that sometimes turns up in photographs mistakenly. I have read that many spiritualists and psychics believe that these orbs are in fact spiritual guides, spirits or ghosts. Now to be honest I think that this as a theory is absolute bull but that's what came to my mind when I saw the images. 


Inspired by the shape and form of these balls of light, that Denis Smith has beautifully created, I decided to make some balls of light of my own, not out of light mind you but by paper mache-ing tracing paper onto balloons and then putting light into them.


The images of the 3D orbs or balls of Light show them at there early stages of there design. I just made them today and they will be ready by tomorrow to be finished...I hope! :)

So... this is what happens when I get a hold of some fairy lights!!

Practicing for the short film using light drawing. These are only practice photos but still I really enjoyed the process. Experimenting with different movement and gestures to manipulate the light was quite exciting!!!  Hope I'll have a bit more done by the end of the week :) I did these after work you might make out my uniform in one... completely forgot about it till i looked a bit closer at the photos haha!

Light and colour 3d piece!

Here's the finished 3D piece!! I created it with the felt I made earlier on and I attached it to a wooden frame. Then I covered the frame with tracing paper. Then by putting a strong light at the back of the frame the result was that the colour and shape of the felt glowed through the tracing paper. I hope it looks well. :)
